27.01.2020 −

Turnover in the German furniture, kitchen and furnishings trade sector increased by 4% to €34.2bn gross over the entire period of 2019. This is the conclusion reached by the Handelsverband Möbel und Küchen (BVDM) on the basis of projections based on figures for the first ten months prepared by the Federal Statistical Office. Gross online turnover amounted to €3.5bn. Compared with 2018, this corresponds to a 9.4% increase and a 10.2% proportion of total turnover. According to the BVDM, brick-and-mortar traders are playing an increasingly important role in this connection. In the past, these traders had largely left this segment to businesses which operate exclusively online. The increase in total turnover achieved in 2019 in fact more than compensated for the 2% decline to €32.9bn recorded in 2018. For 2020 the BVDM expects demand to remain stable.

In 2019 kitchen furniture was again the strongest product group - with a turnover proportion of 26%. This was followed by upholstered furniture at 22%, bedroom furniture at 13% and living room furniture at 11%. Turnover distribution of the individual segments was therefore identical to 2018. The other product groups consequently also remained unchanged at a proportion of 28%.

The Federal Statistical Office includes approximately 8,500 companies in its assessment of the furniture, kitchen and furnishing sector, with about 100,000 employees.
